El exoficial de Policía de Minnesota Derek Chauvin fue condenado ayer a 22 años y medio de prisión por el asesinato del afroestadunidense George Floyd, una muerte que provocó la mayor protesta contra la injusticia racial en Estados Unidos en generaciones.
La pena —inferior a los 30 años que pedía la Fiscalía— se impuso después de que Chauvin rompiera el silencio que mantuvo durante más de un año en el tribunal para dar el pésame a la familia Floyd y decir que espera que la información que salga a la luz les dé “cierta tranquilidad”.
Con buen comportamiento, el exagente, de 45 años, podría salir en libertad condicional tras cumplir dos tercios de su condena.
Para alguien sin antecedentes penales, como Chauvin, la ley de Minnesota establece una sentencia de 12 años y medio.
No obstante, el juez Peter Cahill fue más allá, debido a lo que describió como “abuso de una posición de confianza y autoridad y también la particular crueldad” mostrada hacia Floyd. La familia de la víctima, sin embargo, pidió ayer la “pena máxima” de 40 años.
En abril, el expolicía fue declarado culpable de tres cargos de homicidio por haber presionado su rodilla contra el cuello de Floyd por hasta nueve minutos y medio pese a que el hombre afirmaba que no podía respirar, el 25 de mayo de 2020.
Desde entonces, Chauvin se encontraba en prisión a la espera de su sentencia.
